Take the opportunity of a full day private accessible tour to Girona, to discover this walled city based in a hill creating a fortress, located a 2h drive from Barcelona. Founded by the Iberians, but later settled by the Romans and renamed Gerunda, it became an important stop on the Via Augusta – the longest Roman road of Hispania. In the Middle Age, Girona was frequently sieged by the enemies due to its proximity to the French frontier. Its exciting history is reflected all around the city: on its buildings, monuments and streets. Also Girona has a lot of myths and legends that our official tour guide will tell you all about during our full day private accessible tour from Barcelona.
Our tour starts at the Plaça de la Independència, a square surrounded with original buildings and nearby little shops, bars and restaurants. We will take a pleasant stroll along the Santa Clara street, parallel to the Onyar river, to enjoy the views of the famous colorful houses along the river shore and to discover important buildings, such as the Ferreires y Vallés Bridge, designed by Gustav Eiffel. Crossing over the Piedra bridge we can enjoy the views of the Onyar river. This bridge leads to Rambla de la Llibertat, a street with medieval influences. Here we can also find the Jewish Quarter, one of the best preserved of the world. The Jewish Quarter and the whole historic town of Girona has pronounced hills and irregular old stone pavement especially in the Cathedral area, therefore some people depending on their level of mobility are recommended to be accompanied or use motorised wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
At the end of this street we will find the Cathedral of Santa Maria, built between the 11th and 18th Centuries and with a mix of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles. The most singular feature is its large Gothic nave, the second largest in the world. The area around the Cathedral is hilly and the pavement has very old cobblestones. If you are a Game of Thrones fan, these streets might look familiar because it is in fact where season 6 was filmed.
After our visit to this historical city, we will drive the 2 hours back to Barcelona.
