Enjoy your stay in Madrid with our half day tour to Aranjuez, also known as the Royal Estate of Aranjuez. You guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel and take you for approximately 1h south of Madrid to this half day tour to Aranjuez on the Tajo river bank.
On our tour, we will visit the main attraction in Aranjuez: the Royal Palace, an UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was built on the order of Santiago, however eventually the Catholic Monarchs assumed authority of this order and Aranjuez then became part of the Royal state with the palace becoming a countryside residence for the Spanish kings. The plan for the palace was initiated by Carlos V who wanted to build a large Italian-style villa and his son Felipe II started building in 1564 when he became the next king. The works didn’t finish until 200 years later in 1752 with Fernando VI as the king. The original structure remained until 1775, when Carlos II added two more wings.
Juan Bautista de Toledo, the original architect, designed leafy avenues that ran through the gardens and farming land. The Borbones kept improving the outside of the palace and added new gardens and new system of tree-lined streets and created a small village within the estate. We will take a walk in these gardens running along the Tajo river. At Príncipe Garden, we will visit the Falúas Museum, that has a spectacular collection of recreational crafts belonging to the Spanish kings, and the Real Casa del Labrador, a country house built by Carlos V famous for its interesting architectural style.
After touring the palace and its gardens we will take a lunch break in Aranjuez before returning to Madrid (meal not included).
This tour does not require a high amount of walking or wheeling, and it can also be tailor-made based on each person preferences. Some points in the Royal Palace have old stone pavement and small steps. However, the itinerary avoids steps, steep hills and it follows a mostly flat path along the tour.
